Book First Edition Signed
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. 127, (16). Errata on last page. Lacks covers. Partial inscription at top of title --- from the Author with what appears to be the author s signature J. F. Dumoulin above the imprint. A timely book dealing with human migration, especially whether one should be allowed to change citizenship, likely prompted by the British impressment of British-born naturalized Americans they claimed were British subjects for life. The author had some correspondence with Thomas Jefferson, inscribing and sending a copy to the ex-President and another to Col. Thomas Randolph. Jefferson responded, thanking him and writing: I doubt whether there is a man in the world who provided he has thought at all on the subject has not there found the same innate feeling of right to live on the outside of an artificial geographical line as he has to live within it whether he feels any obligation to die by disease or famine in one country rather than go to another where he can live? Dedicated to Secretary of State James Monroe. Often attributed to John Hay [1765-1830] in some sources because it repeats the main points of Hay's A Treatise on Expatriation (1814). Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2320. Sabin 22945. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. [Extrapatriation: Early Washington DC Imprint] Fine modern leather burgundy binding. Gilt ruled, with front leather label. 22 cm. 127, xv p. Scattered foxing, early water damage. Marginal corner tear to last 4 leaves of appendix, errata. Dedicated to Secretary of State James Monroe. This book was inspired by Great Britain's impressment of British-born naturalized American sailors from American ships. The British defended this practice by claiming that men born as British subjects cannot renounce their citizenship. They were thus eligible for impressment. The author of this essay refutes this claim with evidence drawn from natural law and the law of nations. This book is attributed to John Hay [1765-1830] in some sources because it repeats the main points of Hay's A Treatise on Expatriation (1814). Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2320. Sabin 22945.
