Pamphlet. 2nd edition. 19 p.; 16.5 cm. [First printed in 1922] `The Galilean people were in a sorry plight, and the one passion that possessed all hearts was the hope of the Deliverance, which many called the Kingdom of God.What they meant by this they scarcely knew. For some it meant little more than "Free meals for everybody and down with the Romans"; for others it meant a great deal more. For all itmeant a way outof the miserable present with all its needless suffering, and a day of triumph for the good cause. It was no more than a hope, and for most a remote one; for it could only come about, they thought, through a Divine intervention with signs and wonders, breating up the normal course of things in some inconceivable way. This was the people to whom Jesus came; and he was one of them.' (p. 4) -- `But he did not come back to Pilate and the priests. They did not want him. He came back to men who, though they had failed him,did want him very badly. And so he comes still, for he is still looking for men whowill live for that dream of the Kingdom of God to which he gave his life. There is a story that some of his friends wentback when all was over to their fishing onthe Lake. In the misty dawn they thought they saw a figure on the beach, but they did not know who it was. But he called to them to cast their net, as Jesus used to call;and as they obeyed they knew it was their Leader, and once more they heard him say, "Follow me!". So he stands before us. Many of us scarcely know who he is. But he has tasks for us to do for him in our day, and as we put our hands to the task we come to know him for the one Leader worth a man's following, and his service as the one life worth living.' (p. 19) VG, stapled, in orig. green on cream wrapper.
