Published by Whitcombe and Tombs, Auckland, 1921

Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. F W Birch (illustrator). 2nd. Dobbie's "New Zealand Ferns" was first published in 1916 with this " revised and greatly enlarged" second edition published in 1921 to become accepted as the reference work on the subject for many years. The book is divided into genera of 31 sections containg 134 authenticated species and 24 authenticated varieties, additionally, at the friont is a list of 132 ferns found only in New Zealand, a list of self-grown ferrs in Auckland from 1915 to 1918 and notes on fern cultivation. At the back is a list of popular names for ferns. In his introductory comments the author recalls that as boy in England he had collected ferns. Arriving at Auckland in 1875 he was eager to explore the NZ bush and after a few days ashore walked to the Waitakere where, after scrambling over some fern hills, he emerged: "suddenly into a bush gully. Never shall I forget that first half hour; the sensation of beholding entirely new ferns in whichever direction I turned my eyes." There can be little doubt that this experience fired the inspiration that led to this epic study. Many books on the topic of NZ ferns have followed Doobbie's work, which still can provide valuabe information for those with an interest in this aspect of NZ's botanical gems. Adding to author's text material are exceptional fern photographs by F W Birch complementing each entry. Second edition of 1921 from Whitcombe and Tombs, 394 pages including index. Illustrated will b/w photos throughout. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles and fern decoration, with the front board having a different gilt decoration and gilt title, are VG+ with light and unobtrusive mottling at vertical edge, ink name/address top corner FFEP, text block is otherwise excellent.
