Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First edition. Very good blind & gilt stamped cloth hardcover, binding near-fine with bright gilt. 315 clean and unmarked pages, tight. Illustrated with frontispiece and 18 additional plates, predominately from photographs. James Francis Dickie, D.D., Congregational minister, pastor of the American Church in Berlin from 1894 to 1908. This church was established to serve American students studying in that city. "Among the steadily increasing number of books on Germany written by Americans, the impressions and reminiscences of Dr. J. F. Dickie, pastor of the American church in Berlin, are the most unrestrictedly sympathetic. Owing to the kindness he has experienced there, says the author in the second chapter of his book, he claims almost a citizen's share and interest, as though he were a child of Imperial Berlin. To the visitor not contented with the tourist's field of vision.he has done an inestimable service by his chapter on Berlin legends, his descriptions of the region of the Muhlendamm and the Fischerbrucke, and his translation of Frau Minna Hemnel's reminiscences of old Berlin, especially in the days of Henriette Herz and Rahel Varnhagen. On the whole one carries away the impression that it is the people Dr. Dickie met, rather than the city itself, that appealed to him. A man who was not only received by the Emperor, but thrown into association with some of the leading personalities in the world of intellect, such as Hermann Grimm, Otto Pflelderer, Otto Harnack, Adolf Stoecker, Emil Frommel, Ernst Curtius, Theodor Mommsen, Rudolf Virchow, Joseph Joachim and Adolf Menzel may well forget, in the light of the halo they throw about any place, the shadows hovering in the background." - New York Times, April 9, 1911.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD,' Published October, 1910' ). You can see the covers in the photos. They are very clean. There is a blind stamped decoration on the front. The gilt lettering on the front is raised, nicely bright. The gilt lettering on the spine is also nicely bright. There is very little wear on the covers, a little crinkling at the spine ends, light rubbing at the corners, including a very tiny spot of rub-through at each of the two bottom corners. The cover edges are in excellent shape. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is solid from cover to cover. The covers are nicely tight. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, only found one instance of a small spot at the bottom corner of to facing pages, far from the print. There is very little by way of creasing, few late pages have a tiny crease under there top corner, also far from the print. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The inside covers and end papers look very good as well. As I mentioned the pages are rough-cut. One almost all of them they did a very good job, meeting no significant jaggedness. A handful or so to have a little jaggedness. The Contents page in particular as some thin loss off its middle edge, not reaching near the print. There are nineteen illustrations they are all in excellent condition. I didn't see any foxing anywhere in the book. A really nice-looking book. Here are the chapter headings: The Royal Family, The City and the Colony, Housekeeping in Berlin, Berlin Street Characters, Berlin Legends, Notable Visitors to Berlin, Emil Frommmel, Adolph Stoecker, Ernst Curtius, Joseph Joachim, Adolph Menzel, Prof. Harnack, Otto Pfleiderer, Dr. Rudolf Virchow, Hermann Grimm, Theodore Mommsen, Mark Twain, Frau Meta Hempel, Extracts from a Lecture on Old Berlin from Frau Meta Hempel, The Salons of Old Berlin, The Salon of Henriette Herz, Salon of Rahel, History of the American Church in Berlin.
