Cream-colored wrappers printed in black and with black letters on the spine. Just touches of wear to extremities, wrappers clean, wrappers and pages just starting to turn as usual, all photos in fine condition, previous owner's name and date [Cloyda Mangrunn (?) | Madrid | June 1955], else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Born in Tauton, MA, Amarie Dennis (1912-2010) entered Smith College, spent her junior year in Spain, and graduated in 1934 Cum Laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After teaching Spanish for a year, Mrs. Dennis returned to Spain to work on a Master's Degree and subsequently spent time there before WW II. During the next 18 years, the family made their homes in Rome, London, New York, Madrid (twice) and Buenos Aires. After her husband's ea rly retirement in 1960, they made their home in Madrid for 28 years. Dennis researched in the Spanish Archives, published six books, including five biographies and a book of poems. For her literary work Dennis received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Middlebury College, and was made a Knight Commander of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise by the Spanish Government, the highest literary decoration in Spain. This book is about Juana La Loca (Joanna the Mad), 1479-1555, the daughter of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, wife of Philip the I of Burgundy and mother of Charles, Holy Roman Emperor. Titular Queen of the Spanish kingdoms for much of her life, because of mental illness regency was exercised on her behalf by her father, husband, or son.
