Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Maps, Drawings (illustrator). 1st. The author was a life-long collector of informations and photographs relating to the Christchurch suburbs extending from Sumner to Ferrymead and at the time of his death in 1973 he had compiled most of the text material for this book, with John Coffey editing his manuscrips for publication. Owinjg to his intensive participation in community and sporting organisations in the area from the late 1800s de Thier was the ideal man to assemble this local history, which is an excellent example of that genre. Tracing the history back to the early days of the Canterbury settlement, the author brings the story up to the 1970s, with the book presented in seven sections: Early Sumner; Godley Heads to Scarborough; More About Sumner; Clifton to McCormack's Bay; Mount Pleasant and St Andrew's Hill; The Estuary and Sumner Bar and Ferrymead and Heathcote. A pleasing aspect is the inclusion of many cameo drawings by Roma White and Bret de Thier depicting scenes from the past or the small sailing craft seen on the estuary. First edition of 1976, published by Pagasus, 216 pages including two appendices covering clubs, churces and societies and place names, index, 88 b/w illustrations centrally located, mainly photos with some art, cameo drawings, two maps and marine signals diagram, colour tone e/paper maps. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+ with slight wear to spine extremities, internally excellent, no inscriptions.
