Coyné, etc. C'est fin 1951 après la disparition des revues Cobra, et Rixes qu'il avait créees, que le poète et critique Edouard Jaguer a l'idée, avec sa femme Anne Éthuin et quelques artistes, de créer une nouvelle " structure d'accueil " aussi souple que possible et ouverte aux artistes de tous pays. Georges Hénein qui s'était associé à ce projet lui écrit du Caire le 7 janvier 1952 à ce propos : " Je souhaite que la revue soit celle d'un certain désordre qui donne à croire que tout est loin d'être dit; qu'elle devienne la plaque irradiante qui pourrait rendre le monde sensible. Peu importe que ce soit là l'affaire d'une chance sur un million. " L'année suivante, le titre de PHASES est choisi et apposé en février sur le catalogue de l'exposition d'ALECHINSKY et TAJIRI à Amsterdam, avec le texte par Christian Dotremont L'ARBRE ET L'ARME et des dessins de Jacques HEROLD et de Wilfredo LAM. Après maints retards, la décision est prise de lancer le premier numéro dans le cadre d'une exposition chez Paul Facchetti, regroupant vingt peintres et sculpteurs, la plupart encore inconnus du public parisien. Au demeurant, cette manifestation, en raison de son caractère "surréaliste" pour les uns, "expérimental" pour les autres, sera fraîchement accueillie par la critique des journaux de l'époque, tant officielle que "progressiste. Au cours des dix-huit années qui suivront, les même feuilltonnistes se dépatiront d'ailleurs rarement de leur hostilité, lorsqu'ils n'appliqueront pas purement et simplement la fameuse "consigne du silence". Bien qu'ouverte à la poésie, Phases est résolument tournée vers la jeune peinture abstraite et le surréalisme d'après-guerre, prenant vite les dimensions de tout un mouvement. Plusieurs numéros de la revue sont d'ailleurs édités à l'occasion de quelques unes des nombreuses expositions collectives, comme en 1955 à la galerie Creuze à Paris (n°2) et au Stedelijk Museum d'Amsterdam en 1957 (n°4). Le numéro 11 de notre collection est dédicacé et enrichi d'un dessin par E. Jaguer (page séparée d'un carnet de dessin).
