Dark blue cloth with gilt titling and elaborate decoration on spine, top text block edge is gilt, leading and lower edges untrimmed which has resulted in a few uncut pages, black end papers, red titling and elaborate black decorative border on title page, 474 pages, two pages of publisher's advertising at back. Light wear to corners, edges and spine ends, cover has light shelf wear, gilt on top edge is bright, other edges slightly darkened, leading edge has a few small, dark spots, page edges slightly darkened. This is a handsome volume, in remarkably nice condition for its age - clean, bright and tight. Shipping charges are calculated for a standard parcel under 1 kg. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. 4 3/4" x 7." Vol. I: 347 pages, complete. Vol. II: 329 pages, complete. One black-and-white illustrated frontispiece portrait of the author in Vol. I, complete. Former owner's signature in black ink on a front flyleaf in each volume. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning. Covers are clean and intact overall but have light rubbing to front and back and moderate wear along edges and corners. Binding is tight. Very Good copies. A two-volume collection of select essays by Thomas De Quincey. Edited with annotations by David Masson. Vol. I contains the following: De Quincey's satirical series, Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts; Early Memorials of Grasmere; and Revolt of the Tartars. The following are in Vol. II: The Spanish Military Nun, The English Mail-Coach, and Suspira de Profundis: Being a Sequel to the "Confession of an English Opium-Eater." Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) was an English author, essayist, and literary critic. He is perhaps known for his autobiographical work, Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821), which is not included in this collection of essays.
