Hard cover, large 8vo, in blue cloth, with a blind stamped image of clipper ship to front board, the spine blocked with titles and clipper ship image in gold, map-printed endpapers, xxvii, 592pp. with many illustrations taken from marine paintings (some in color)**CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Lacking d/j, with a few marks to covers, light edge wear and slight toning to prelims. However, hinges are in order, and the pages remain clean, bright and with no signs of foxing. **This classic history of the American clipper ship belongs on the shelf of any mariner (or landlubber) of the ship-building communities along the American east coast, or those historians and economists interested in the conduct of trade under sail in the first century of the United States. The ports at Salem, Portsmouth, Newburyport, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco are touched upon, as well as foreign ports served by the ships launched from them. The China- to- England trade is listed in an appendix detailing 139 voyages between 1850-60, for instance. Individual vessels and their tonnages are listed and indexed. The Author, Carl C. Cutler (1878-1966) was a both a lawyer and a passionate researcher of maritime history, who helped establish the American Marine Historical Association, and was involved at Connecticut's Mystic Seaport Museum.
