Hardcover. Condition: Good. George Cruikshank (illustrator). 1st Edition. Spine is worn and the covers are grubby, contents clean, although some light tanning, heavier on the back of three plates. Folding, hand-coloured frontispiece, titled "The Rights of Women or the Effects of Female Enfranchisement", in very good condition with no tears. Five further plates, one plate titled, "taking care of number one" is missing. Inscribed in pencil, 'Hawarden', possibly from the library of William Gladstone.

Twenty plates in all; plus woodcut illustrations after Cruikshank replicated on front of each wrapper. Most with PUBLISHER'S PRESENTATION blindstamp on front cover. All lacking rear covers (each with plain tan wrap at rear instead) and tissue guards for plates. Each part appears to have been trimmed at top and bottom. Part X front cover darkened, else all are very good with only minor soiling to covers and with plates themselves near fine to fine. First Edition, First Impression - The First Issue - In the 10 original parts in the Original paper wrappers. They are housed within a custom made book box, the hinge to the box is loose and the leather at the hinge is rubbed and cracked. The box is bound in navy blue morocco with elaborate gilt detailing to both the inside and outside of the box. Size octavo. Condition is very good plus. Part I has slightly dust darkened covers with minor crease to top edge and rubbing to the corners and spine tips, Part IX has slight dust darkening to the edges of the covers and slight curl to the corners of the front cover, Part X has a little dust darkening to the cover edges, slight curl to the corners, very slight chipping to lower edge of covers and a small bookseller's blind-stamp to the upper outer corner of the front cover. The covers of the other parts are very clean and bright indeed, exceptionally well preserved and looked-after. The spines are slightly darkened to each part. The contents, including the title pages and the plates are exceptionally in each part. There are twenty full page plates by George Cruikshank - 2 in each part. A very attractive set. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

First edition, in the original, untrimmed and unopened monthly parts: TEN OCTAVO PARTS IN PICTORIAL PAPERWRAPS, housed together in gilt-lettered green-cloth chemise with bookplate of Maude M. Monell and matching green-cloth slipcase. Pale yellow pictorial paperwraps each with woodcut after Cruikshank on front cover and each with two full-page plates at front -- 20 etched plates by Cruikshank in all. Apart from some minor soiling to wrappers an excellent untrimmed set with tissue guards present between all but one set of plates and with all but Part I unopened. Touch of spotting to plates, Part I; old damp stain to plate fore edges, Part VII; and stain to upper corner last several leaves and rear cover, Part VIII. Text on back wrappers corresponding to Cohn's except for Part III ("A List of New Works") and Part IV ("New Books of the Season").
