Condition: Fair. No Edition Remarks. 272 pages. No dust jacket. Grey cloth with gilt lettering. Rough-cut and uncut pages. Black and white photographic plates. Visible loss to front free endpaper. Moderate foxing and tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Light cracking to gutters slightly exposing netting but binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with visible staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Pages are lightly tanned with moderate foxing to endpapers and text block edges. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper and paste-down, with a few small nicks along text block edge. Minor dog-eared corners. Occasional thumb-marking present throughout. Mild cracking to gutters with exposed netting. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with mild bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Heavy tanning to spine and edges, with visible crushing to spine ends. Book has a subtle forward lean. Thumb-marking to front board. Minor insect damage and cluster of small dark spots to upper edge.

No Jacket. 1st ed. f/piece+tissue guard ( small brown 'photogravure' print of painting of Swarthmoor Hall)+(6, unpaginated prelims)+272, 2 further ills ex-pagination, an unfolding map, extended unfolding family tree after p. 266 of Thomas and Margaret Fell's children and grandchildren (a little creased but sound), top edge gilt; front endpaper has handwritten 1913-dated gift inscription to Friends' Meeting House Library, Tunbridge Wells above its early bluish stamp, occ.light brown spotting, more so to fore-edge of textblock, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked; bevelled-edge covers rather dull a a tad grubby in places, pale circular lib.number ghost bottom spine, ends of back joint rubbed but minimally worn otherwise. Margaret Fox, nee Fell, was a prominent early Quaker campaigner who married George Fox. Swarthmoor Hall, her family home, was in Ulverston, Lancashire. Undated but Preface date confirms gift inscription date. A sound reading and reference copy.
