Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Here is "A Lute of Jade, Being Selections from the Classical Poets of China", rendered and with an Introduction by L. Cranmer-Byng. The book was published by E. P. Dutton & Company in its "Wisdom of the East" series in 1923. This is the Third American Printing. The book has a brief but enlightening Introduction about the ancient classic poetry of China. This copy has seen considerable use and displays various flaws (such as ragged leaf edges, staining and loss of color), but remains, nonetheless, clean and serviceable. ************************************************* The editors of the Wisdom of the East Series say the following in a brief Editorial Note : "The object of the editors of this series is a very definite one. they desire above all things that, in their humble way, this should be an ambassador of good-will and understanding between East and West, the old world ofThought, and the new of Action. In this endeavor, and in their own sphere, they are but followers of the highest example in the land. They are confident that a deeper knowledge of the great ideals and lofty philosophy of Oriental thought may help to a revival of that true spirit of Charity which neither despises nor fears the nations of another creed and colour." *********************************************** Poets included in the anthology : Confucius / Ch'ü Yüan / Wang Seng-Ju / Ch'ên Tzû-Ang / Sung Chih-Wên / Kao-Shih / Méng Hao-Jan / Ch'ang Ch'ien / Ts'ên-Ts'an /Tu Fu / Li Po / Wang Ch'ang-Ling / Chang Chih-Ho / Chang Jo-Hu / T'ung Han-Ching / Po Chü-I / Li Hua / Ssü-K'ung T'u / Ou-Yang Hsiu of Lu-Ling ********************************************* SERIES : Wisdom of the East / SERIES EDITORS : L. Cranmer-Byng and Dr. S. A. Kapadia / TITLE : A Lute of Jade / TRANSLATION - INTRODUCTION : L. Cranmer-Byng (Launcelot Cranmer - Byng, 1872 - 1945) / IMPRINT : E. P. Dutton & Company / PLACE : New York / DATE : (1923) / EDITION : Third U. S. Printing / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Contains an introduction and an appendix (which is actually a brief Bibliography); 116 pages; 5 1/8" x 7 1/2"; pale blue, cloth-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering on spine; gilt lettering small picture of a rising sun, both within a simple line border, also stamped in gilt. (title page replicated the rising sun as a line drawing). Text-block fore-edge s rough cut. ******************************************** CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that shows signs of age and handling, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Spine color is faded; spine lettering is faded; spine extremities are compressed; front board has scattered small spotting, staining, and loss of surface color; fading about the edges; a damp stain can just be discerned on the bottom spine-side corner - this can be seen to extend to the rear board covering a slightly larger area; rear board has two areas of color loss; text-block edges are toned, else clean. / BINDING -- Leaves open widely, but the whole is still fairly solid. No leaves are detached or loose. / INTERIOR -- Most noticeable on the interior is that the first person to read the book separated the leaves rather carelessly - it's was sloppy separating - leaving ragged fore-edges (We've shown a bit of this in our pictures); the interior has toned paper, else is clean and free of marking.
