Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Coryat's Crudities; Reprinted from the Edition of 1611. To which are now added, His Letters from India, &c. and Extracts Relating to Him, from Various Authors: . Together with his Orations, Character, Death &c., with Copper-plates. In Three Volumes. Large Octavo (8vo). Original tree calf bindings, some labels missing to spine; chipping to top of spine and minor split to upper front join on volI otherwise bindings firm, intact and hinges strong on all volumes. Contents particularly clean. Numerous copper plates and pictorial devices throughout. Armourial book plates of Spains Hall Finchingfield Essex pasted to inside of front boards. Fascinating account from the self nicknamed Odcombe Leg Stretcher . After hard toil selling his original account of 1611 and fed up with very little acknowledgement from the then Prince Regent he literally hung up his boots in the dreamy village of Odcombe in Dorset, his home, and shortly after set off on his final travels East where eventually he died of dysentery and was buried courtesy of the East India Company who commemorated him with a plaque which remains to this day. I can confirm upon a visit to Odcombe with my wife a few years back that he is still remembered and revered by some of the villagers and there is a memorial to him in the village church yard. The boots, incidentally, were stolen in the late nineteenth century. These volumes cover his original European tour of 1608 (pub 1611) and his subsequent travels to India.
