Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Peter Menzel (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Printing. The hardcover first printing is quite rare. I found only one other for sale. This book has had a number of printings. It's a large and heavy book. I am offering free shipping. The book will be sent in a box and securely packaged in bubble wrap. You can see it's covers in the photos. They are mainly quite clean. There are two small, light spots on the rear cover. The gilt (or silver, depending on how the light hits) lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges are in very nice shape. The cover corners have only speck-sized spots of rubbing. There's also a little spot of rubbing at both the front and rear sides of the spine, just off the top edge. The page edges look terrific, perfectly clean. The book is square and the spine straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers display an illustration of a multitude of Campbell's soup cans, asparagus, mushrooms, minestrone, etc. They are all in excellent condition (the inside covers and end papers that is), perfectly clean, no wear. That accurately describes the condition of all the pages. They are semi-glossy and exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm also not finding any instances of creasing. And there are no markings or attachments, and no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. As you would expect, there are a tremendous number of photographs, color photographs, quite interesting to look at and all in exceptional condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. I don't see any soiling. There is some very light toning. I don't see any tears. The flaps are in nice condition, very clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I will warn ahead of having taken the photos that the protective cover will attract glare so you won't mistake it for something else. From the dust jacket: 'In Hungry Planet, the creative team behind the best-selling Material World books, Peter Menzel and Faith D'alusio, presents a photographic study of families from around the world, revealing what people eat during the course of one week. Each family's profile includes a detailed description of their weekly food purchases; photographs of the family at home, at the market, and in their community; and a portrait of the entire family surrounded by a week's worth of groceries. To assemble this remarkable comparison Menzel and D'alusio traveled to twenty-four countries and visited thirty families from Bhutan and Bosnia to Mexico and Mongolia.'.

Hardcover. INSCRIBED OVERSIZED HARDCOVER in NEAR FINE Condition in NEAR FINE unclipped ("$40.00") Dustjacket. INSCRIBED in black ink on title page: "For Trish & Karl-- Happy Woking! -- Corby Kummer" otherwise, INTERIOR PRISTINE: clean, tight, bright. Approx 9 1/4" by 11," 175 glossy heavy-stock pp. w/ Resource Guide, Index & Table of Equivalents. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED throughout w/ color photographs. Photographs by Susie Cushner. Preface by Carlo Petrini. Foreword by Eric Schlosser. Corby Kummer's work in The Atlantic has established him as one of the most widely read, authoritative, and creative food writers in the United States. The San Francisco Examiner pronounced him "a dean among food writers in America." Julia Child once said, "I think he's a very good food writer. He really does his homework. As a reporter and a writer he takes his work very seriously." Kummer's 1990 Atlantic series about coffee was heralded by foodies and the general public alike. The response to his recommendations about coffees and coffee-makers was typical--suppliers scrambled to meet the demand. As Giorgio Deluca, co-founder of New York's epicurean grocery Dean & Deluca, says: ''I can tell when Corby's pieces hit; the phone doesn't stop ringing." His book, The Joy of Coffee, based on his Atlantic series, was heralded by The New York Times as "the most definitive and engagingly written book on the subject to date.'' In nominating his work for a National Magazine Award (for which he became a finalist), the editors wrote: "Kummer treats food as if its preparation were something of a life sport: an activity to be pursued regularly and healthfully by knowledgeable people who demand quality." Kummer's recent book, The Pleasures of Slow Food, celebrates local artisans who raise and prepare the foods of their regions with the love and expertise that come only with generations of practice. Kummer was restaurant critic of New York Magazine in 1995 and 1996 and since 1997 has served as restaurant critic for Boston Magazine. He is also a frequent food commentator on television and radio. He was educated at Yale, and came to The Atlantic Monthly in 1981. He is the recipient of three James Beard Journalism Awards, including the MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award. The Pleasures of Slow Food showcases over 60 recipes from the world's most innovative chefs for dishes that feature local handmade ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Premier food writer Corby Kummer also profiles Slow Food's luminaries, such as Italian cheese maker Roberto Rubino and Canadian Karl Kaiser, who makes sweet ice-wine. Pairing fantastic recipes with engaging stories, The Pleasures of Slow Food brings the best of the food world to the kitchen table.
