Paperback. Condition: Very Good. When English naturalist Joseph Banks (1743-1820) accompanied Captain James Cook (1728-1779) on his historic mission into the Pacific, the Endeavour voyage of 1768-71, he took with him a team of collectors and illustrators. Banks and his team returned from the voyage with unprecedented collections of artefacts and specimens of stunning birds, fish and other animals as well as thousands of plants, most seen for the first time in Europe. They produced, too, remarkable landscape and figure drawings of the peoples encountered on the voyage along with detailed journals and descriptions of the places visited, which, with the first detailed maps of these lands (Tahiti, New Zealand and the East Coast of Australia), were afterwards used to create lavishly illustrated accounts of the mission. These caused a storm of interest in Europe where plays, poems and satirical caricatures were also produced to celebrate and examine the voyage, its personnel and many 'new' discoveries. Along with contemporary portraits of key personalities aboard the ship, scale models and plans of the ship itself, scientific instruments taken on the voyage, commemorative medals and sketches, the objects (over 140) featured in this new book will tell the story of the Endeavour voyage and its impact ahead of the 250th anniversary in 2018 of the launch of this seminal mission. Artwork made both during and after the voyage will be seen alongside actual specimens. And by comparing the voyage originals with the often stylized engravings later produced in London for the official account, the book will investigate how knowledge gained on the mission was gathered, revised and later received in Europe. Items separated in some cases for more than two centuries will be brought together to reveal their fascinating history not only during but since that mission. Original voyage specimens will feature together with illustrations and descriptions of them, showing a rich diversity of newly discovered species and how Banks organized this material, planning but ultimately failing to publish it. In fact, many of the objects in the book have never been published before. The book will focus on the contribution of Banks's often neglected artists Sydney Parkinson, Herman Diedrich Spoering, Alexander Buchan as well as the priest and Pacific voyager Tupaia, who joined Endeavour in the Society Islands, none of whom survived the mission. These men illustrated island scenes of bays, dwellings, canoes as well as the dress, faces and possessions of Pacific peoples. Burial ceremonies, important religious sites and historic encounters were all depicted. Of particular interest, and only recently recognised as by him, are the original artworks of Tupaia, who produced as part of this mission the first charts and illustrations on paper by any Polynesian. The surviving Endeavour voyage illustrations are the most important body of images produced since Europeans entered this region, matching the truly historic value of the plant specimens and artefacts that will be seen alongside them. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 195pp. (green spine) large 8vo. sized. 2007. First edition. Hardcover in original publisher's laminated boards. Not a perfect copy for a former owner has noticed with an ink line and a question mark an unfinished chapter to page 5 in the introduction. Page 6 is present so apparently a proof reading mistake. The former reader has picked up on this in black ink to the rear endpaper with extensive notes in ink to the rear paste-down - covering the entire paste-down - not very neat, and with slight smudging/offsetting to the rear endpaper. There is a short ink line (in fact two) in the margin next to one paragraph on page 36. Otherwise the book appears to be entirely free from any other ink marginalia. The head of the spine and the lower two board corners a little bumped and an impression mark or two to the front board. A little shelf wear - not heavy - to the rear board. A very good minus or good plus hardback copy - if you were being harsh.

Colour-printed portrait frontispiece after Benjamin West and numerous colour-printed illustrations in the text, many full page. Original paper-backed illustrated boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, light-blue endpapers. (Minimal bumping and unobtrusive small mark on lower board.) A very good copy. ¶¶¶First edition. After HMB Endeavour had returned to England after Cook's first voyage, the materials collected during the voyage were dispersed to a wide range of institutional and private collections, and, as David Attenborough explains in his foreword,'?it has not been possible since that time for anyone to see the full range and richness of the Endeavour's collections in one place. Nearly two hundred and fifty years later, however, that was put right. In 2014, a great range of them was re-assembled from various collections for a celebratory exhibition in Lincoln, Banks's home city. And here is its richly illustrated catalogue. In it you will find reproductions of some of [Sydney] Parkinson's exquisite botanical drawings, together with coloured engravings of them printed from the plates that Banks commissioned, but which were never printed in his lifetime. Here too is a selection of the ethnographic objects, which show the great range and depth of Banks's interests. And how beautiful most of them are, with a perfection of form and detail all the more remarkable to European eyes in that they were all fashioned without the use of metal tools. No expedition before had brought back collections of such a size and importance to such a range of the natural sciences. And Joseph Banks, who was still only twenty-eight years old, had been directly responsible for their assembly. Benjamin West, a fashionable artist of the day, painted Banks's portrait, standing surrounded by a small sample of the artefacts he had gathered -- a Tahitian stone-bladed adze, a Maori paddle and spear and a Tahitian headdress. An open volume of plant drawings lies at his feet. On his shoulders he wears a kaitaka, a Maori cloak woven from the fibres of phormium, the New Zealand flax. As he steps forward towards the spectator, he proudly points a finger to its fringe of highly prized near-sacred dog-hair tassels. Such garments decorated in this way were reserved by the Maori for the most senior members of their nobility and young Joseph Banks wears it with visible pride. As well he might' (pp. 7-8). Endeavouring Banks was edited by Neil Chambers -- the curator of the exhibition and editor of The Scientific Correspondence of Sir Joseph Banks, 1765-1820 (London, 2007, 6 vols), The Indian and Pacific Correspondence of Sir Joseph Banks, 1768-1820 (London, 2009-2014, 8 vols) -- and it comprises 143 items drawn from the collections of the British Library, the British Museum, the Linnean Society, the National Maritime Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Royal Society, and elsewhere. The catalogue is divided into seven sections titled 'The Voyage: Aims and Organisation', 'The Atlantic Stage', 'The Society Islands', 'New Zealand', 'The East Coast of Australia', 'Homeward Bound', and 'Aftermath', and these sections are interspersed with essays on 'Background to the Endeavour Voyage' (Gascoigne), 'Dressing Up, Taking Over and Passing On: Joseph Banks and Artificial Curiosities from the Endeavour Voyage' (Coote), 'The Material History of the Endeavour: Joseph Banks at the British Library' (Hatfield), 'Exploring Collections from the Endeavour Voyage' (Chambers), and 'After the Endeavour: What Next for Joseph Banks?' (Agnarsdóttir). ¶¶¶FURTHER INFORMATION: please contact us for further information about this item and prices for shipping.
