Tall 8vo, viii, 124 pp, colour portrait frontispiece, black & white illustrations, map endpapers, original black cloth with gilt lettering to spine, in dustwrapper, dustwrapper a little soiled and frayed otherwise in very good condition. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on half-title and dated 1952. The mine was taken over by the National Coal Board in 1947 and in 1950 at Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery, a glaciated lake filled with liquid peat and moss flooded pit workings, trapping more than a hundred miners underground. For several days rescue teams worked non-stop to reach the trapped men. Most were eventually rescued three days later, but 13 died. The disaster was an international media event. Inscribed by Author(s).

A beautifully crafted book with scarce original dust jacket. Original publisher's black buckram cloth - gilt embossed to the spine and to the front board. Bevelled edges to the boards. Upper edge gilt. Constructed with what appears to be handwoven thick paper - rough-cut to the leading and lower edges. No inscriptions. A very well preserved near fine copy in very good minus jacket. Slight spotting to the leading edges of a few pages. The jacket has not been price-clipped. It has a crease extending across the rear panel of the jacket. The jacket has a little dust soiling. Around 5 short tears to the peripheries of the jacket, which have been expertly repaired - the largest being 3.5cm in length. A very well preserved copy of a charming, well constructed book.
