Very slight creasing to one edge of the folding map at the rear of the volume. Otherwise, a near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked. ~SP26~ [2.0P] James H. Carson (d. 1853) wrote this volume, supposed to be the first book printed in Stockton, not long before his death. Early recollections of the mines (1852) first appeared as a supplement to the San Joaqui?n Republican in 1852 and was published shortly afterward as a bound pamphlet. The version published here was reprinted in the Magazine of history, 1931. Carson offers a lively narrative of early California history before turning to brief anecdotes of miners' lives in 1848 and 1849 and a glowing promotional description of the Tulare Valley.

First Edition
Hardcover first edition - First printing. James H. Carson was a Virginia native who came to California with his army regiment, which landed at Monterey just after the Mexican War ended in 1847. While on furlough from his military duties in 1848, he panned the tributaries of the Stanislaus River; he struck it rich at what became known as Carson's Creek. In 1850 he acted as a guide to Lt George Derby on the first topographical survey of the Tulare (San Joaquin) Valley. In early 1852, the Stockton newspaper The San Joaquin Republican printed thirty-three articles written by Carson from his sickbed describing humorous anecdotes from his mining experiences. His letters were collected later that year as 'Early Recollections of the California Mines.' He died in 1853, just 32 years old. This edition - the third of his letters - is the most comprehensive; it contains all of Carson's known works, including articles not previously published in book form. Introduction and notes by Doris Shaw Castro. Illustrated, index. 248 pp Fine in fine dust jacket (a new copy.).

One of 750 copies printed by Saul & Lillian Marks at The Plantin Press; reprinted from the Stockton edition of 1852. Foreword by Joseph A. Sullivan. x,113 pp. Wood engravings by Henry Shire. Large folding map, pictorial endpapers. Two-tone cloth lettered in gilt on spine. Spine ends show light rubbing, else a fine copy. The original edition is very rare, being the first book printed in the city of Stockton. It is one of the earliest to give both an account of the discovery of gold and conditions in the mines and provides one of the few early sketches of the San Joaquin Valley. Carson's description of the Tulare (San Joaquin) Valley is considered the best of the early predictions on this great district. The folding map is a reproduction of the rare 1850 Charles Gibbs "Map of the San Joaquin River," and shows the Southern mines in 1852.
