"The general assessment of all the arts relating to the campus is by [Griswold], former President of Yale University. His article, which first appeared in THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY, touches on the feeling, still strong in some universities, against involving academics with artists, but he contends, with his usual vigour and style, that this is mainly prejudice, and outdated. He quite clearly describes the parallel prejudice of the artist against 'the stiflers of art' in the universities, and maintains that 'creative art and higher education are so closely related as to form an integral process'. The four other essays . are by [Coolidge], Director of the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard; [Canfield], Dean of the Yale School of Drama; [Scully], Professor of Art History at Yale; and [Sekler], Professor of Architecture in the Graduate School of Design at Harvard. Much of their material is brilliant, and all of it is authoritative. Their range is broad. The subjects include painting, sculpture, acting, theatre production, architecture. Professor Coolidge clearly states the central dilemma of the working relationship between artists and academics: "The greatest artist will not teach, and those who are less than great are no match as intellects for other members of the faculty and students.".
