Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. xxxi+433pp+illus. Reprint of the original 1886 publication. VG in dusty white dust-jacket, not price-clipped. Book itself bound in yellow cloth with little wear to spine edge, but still firmly bound. Little dusty on fore-edge, but internally very clean. Compiled when Byrnes was in service with the New York police. A superb rogues gallery with over 400 leading offenders of the time, an outline of their crimes and portraits of the criminals. Byrnes used his contacts with criminals to build a network of informants and claimed the New York Detective Bureau had obtained more convictions than Scotland Yard, Paris and New Jersey put together, resulting in some 10,000 years of sentences. This excellent reference work was far ahead of its time and also contains a List of Prisons, Penitentiaries and Reformatories in the United States, plus a full Index. (Very heavy item, may require additional postage).
