Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 336 pages (complete). A VERY, VERY RARE copy of this FIRST EDITION (of which only a few hundred were printed). Original cloth covered boards. An ex-libris plate on the front pastedown indicates that the book was at one stage in the library of Stephen Duncan of 12 Washington Square. Duncan, who had just moved full-time to New York, was an impossibly wealthy man due to slave-owning and agriculture in large part. At the end of the 1850s he had some several thousand slaves (men, women and children) working his farms in the most harsh and strict conditions. Despite some token nods to the mood of the day when in his dotage, there is no evidence at all that he emancipated a single slave. By the time he had moved to Washington Square, his wealth was estimated at $3.5 million. Well he could afford Washington Square as an address. This is a robust copy. The boards have wear about all edges, corners, seams. They have scuffing, handling and storage marks. The spine is still shabbily elegant. The gilt decoration and titling is benign and sure. The boards and spine are healthy, steady, sound. The contents are amiably aged. There is wear to the frontispage. The contents have spots, blots and smudges of foxing here and there throughout. In general, though, the pages (rough, or American cut)are pleasingly healthy, thick, assured, clean and clear, convivial, certain against the binding, confident, agreeably comfortable. fk.
