4pp., 12mo. Bifolium on pink paper. In fair condition, lightly-aged, with minor evidence of removal from stub. A poem of 13 irregular stanzas. Begins: 'When some great warrior returns | Triumphant to his native land, | The heart of all the nation burns | To welcome him. In countless bands | They line the street, | And press to greet, | With shouts and cries and loud acclaim, | The man who saved them from the shame | And misery of defeat.' The seventh stanza is typical: 'They [ 'starving men and women' ] had been patient many years, | No wild, rebellious cry was theirs; | But unto heaven their groans and tears | Went upward mingled with their prayers. | And Famine stalked about the land, | And Death a mighty harvest reaped, | And Want and Sin went hand in hand, | And all the land in misery steeped; | While far and wide rang out the mournful cry, | We have no bread, and wanting bread, we die!' (The eighth stanza concerns the '[b]rown corn in many a furrow', to be found 'across the sea'.) Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and only two copies on OCLC WorldCat and COPAC (Trinity College Dublin and Cambridge).

12mo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To W. W. H. Corbett of Birmingham: "Dear Sir, There is almost no patronage in my office, & there are more names down than can be admitted in 10 years. I believe other depart's are the same. The road is terribly crowded & full of disappointment. I advise you to stay in Birmingham - you will more easily get 10 good places there than one in a Gvt. depart't. To put your name down for a nomination would be of no use. You would be at the bottom of a long list, & should probably never be reached till you were beyond the age at which you could be admitted. I am sorry to give you no hope that I can help you [.]". - The Liberal statesman Bright, hailed as one of the greatest orators of his generation, served as MP for Birmingham from 1858 to 1889. In 1868 he had entered Gladstone's cabinet as President of the Board of Trade. - From the collection of John Henderson (1862-1938), the long-serving secretary of the National Liberal Club.

Offered with: Autograph letter, marked Copy , from McCutcheon to Bright, dated August 1, 1868. 4to. 3 pages.McCutcheon outlines the problems created by unscrupulous wholesale and retail merchants in Canada, and proposes that Britain would do well to establish a colonial trade agent in Canada. He offers himself as a candidate for the position, outlining his qualifications. Bright replies that he is unable to help: "I must leave the insecurity you speak of to cure itself." 12pp. various sizes. Condition: Very Good. 12pp. various sizes. ON CIVIL WAR. John Bright was a British Radical and Liberal statesman, a Quaker orator who battled the Corn Laws, and a promoter of free-trade policies. He says in one letter, dated January 11, 1865: "I take a special interest in the United States because they seem to me to have advanced human freedom beyond the point hitherto reached in Europe. I am observing the progress of your great conflict with an unabated interest, and I hope that before the year expires the rebellion may be suppresssed." The United States Civil War, the "great conflict" to which Bright refers, would end in May of that same year.
