Lande 58. Gagnon I-565. Sabin 7735. The memoirs of a Jesuit missionary who served in New France from 1642 and witnessed the destruction of the Huron Missions by the Iroquois. Originally published in Italian in 1653, it has been translated into French by Father Felix Martin, a Jesuit, along with an added biography of the author, notes and illustrations. Includes period maps including a large folding map of New France (1660) and the Huron Missions from Du Creux Historiae Canadensis of 1644, with an inset of Huronia.

Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. Montréal, des presses à vapeur de John Lovell, 1852, reliure ancienne plein cuir (veau ?), avec lettrage doré au dos, environ 23 X 15.5 cm, 336 pages + un feuillet d?errata à la fin, et illustré de nombreuses petites gravures dans le texte, et bien complet de la page de titre gravée additionnelle, 8 planches (dont deux portraits), 3 cartes (dont deux dépliantes) et un dernier plan dépliant. Notre exemplaire est selon moi en très bon état. La reliure montre quelques frottements mais comme l?ensemble a été recouvert récemment d?une teinture à cuir auto-luisante les parties frottées sont maintenant protégées. On ne mentionnera alors qu?un début de craquement à la partie supérieure de la charnière du premier plat (sans importance). L?intérieur est en très bon état, très frais, sans rien à signaler qui soit digne de mention SAUF la présence de deux cachets d?institution l?une au verso de la première page de garde et l?autre sur la seconde page de titre (non-illustrée). Enfin la dernière page de garde présente quelques petits vestiges d?une pochette de bibliothèque et un petit chiffre discrètement inscrit sur la même page. Somme toute un très bel exemplaire dans une reliure d?époque très attirante.

Also includes are biographicalsketches of various Canadian missionaries, almost invariably ending intheir unfortunate deaths.
