Batavia, the editors, 1844-1847. Four volumes in four. 8vo (22.0 x 12.7 cm). Over 2,300 pp. (Volume I: vi, [1], [8], vi, [1] [7], 638 pp; vol. II: v, 710 [1] pp. ; III: v, 616 [1] pp. pp.; IV: 340 [2] pp.), one folding table. Matching red cloth with snakeskin-patterned boards. = The papers roughly fall in two groups, viz. related to the people inhabiting the islands (local tribes, Chinese, European military personnel), their medical care and diseases; and related to the topography, geology, and natural history of the islands. In the latter category we find descriptions of events such as earth quakes and volcanic eruptions, and descriptions of new species and genera of fungi and higher plants including orchids, fishes (by Pieter Bleeker), birds, and other animals. Other subjects are meteorology, mineralogy (mineral water, oil, gold, etc.) topography, etc. Other authors include Frans Junghuhn, Dr Epp, Zollinger, etc. The first volume starts with a list of subscribers, the vast majority living on the tropical island Java which may explain the rarity of this periodical today. A complete set. In the first issue of volume IV, a unnumbered leaf was added stating the withdrawal of Godefroy, and the intent of the other editors to continue. However, volume IV was terminated after the second of four issues projected - there is no title page. Several wrappers included. The bookbinder erroneously switched the second issues of volumes II and IV. A few small library stamps, otherwise very good. Bibliotheca Neerlando-Indica [Martinus Nijhoff], p. 105.
