Condition: Fair. No Edition Stated. 340 pages. No dust jacket. Signed by the author. Red cloth. Includes black & white frontispiece and plates. Dedication from author to front endpaper. Pages are moderately tanned with noticeable foxing throughout. Noticeable cracking to front hinges causing board to be slightly loose. Page 101 is completely detached but still present. Noticeable cracking to gutters, however the rest of the pages are attached. Faint thumb-marking throughout. Small tears and creases to edges of some pages. Plates are bright and clear, with some light tanning and foxing to edges. Boards have moderate edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Visible tanning to spine and edges with some crushing to spine ends. Gilt lettering is darkened. Faint white marks present to all surfaces. Book is slightly bowed and forward leaning.

Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt embossed City of London coat of arms to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper with red and white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. A history of London from Roman times to the time of writing the book. on the half title page is a pasted on slip stating:  "With Lord Wakefield's Compliments", and underneath is his signature. At some stage this book has come in contact with water, which has caused the dustwrapper to adhere to the front and rear edges of the boards. Softening to the backstrip with bumping of the book corners with rubbing to the lower book edges. Browning and foxing to the textblock edges and to the pages. The hinge has cracked at the rear and the underlying webbing is visible. Previous owners ex libris plate attached to the front paste-down. The dustwrapper is in horrible shape  please see photographs. Chipping to the backstrip edges, dustwrapper edges, dustwrapper corners. The rear dustwrapper by and large is missing and what remains is heavily rubbed marked and generally not in good shape. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Inside is a compliments slip from Lord Wakefield, the former Lord Mayor, who wrote the foreword. Contains a little foxing. Undated First impression. 336 pages. With origins in the mists of time certainly at least dating back to AD43, restored by King Alfred when it was no part of the king's demesne but a sovereign city, its status confirmed by William after the Norman conquest. The book gives a fascinating account of the constitution, its officers and their jurisdiction.

A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a touch of fading to the spine. The contents with toning to the endpapers and some occasional light foxing to the preliminary pages and page edges are otherwise in very good order and clean throughout. Signed and inscribed by Colonel (later Major-General) Robert J. Blackham in black ink to the front free endpaper "Leslie Lan**agin / Esquire / with every / good wish / from / the author / Feb 2nd 1934". The autobiography of Robert James Blackham (1868-1951) of the Royal Army Medical Corps, recounting his experiences in Ireland, India (including the Tirah Campaign), and the First World War.
