Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. xi+1040 pages with frontispiece, tables and diagrams. Small quarto (10 3/4" x 7 1/4") bound in half green leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. Foreword by Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa and Carl Schlechter. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 720) Eighth edition. Handbuch des Schachspiels (Handbook of Chess, often simply called the Handbuch) is a chess book, first published in 1843 by Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa. It was one of the most important opening references for many decades. The Handbuch had been the project of Paul Rudolf von Bilguer, who was with von der Lasa a member of the Berlin Chess Club and the influential group of chess masters later called the Berlin Pleiades. Bilguer died in 1840, with the work still in the early stages. Von der Lasa completed the project and saw it published, with his friend von Bilguer alone named as author. It contained comprehensive analyses of all opening variations then known, plus a section on the history and literature of chess. Von der Lasa prepared four further editions (1852, 1858, 1864, and 1874). The sixth edition (1880) was by Constantin Schwede; and the seventh edition (1891) was by Emil Schallopp, with the assistance of Louis Paulsen. Carl Schlechter, who had drawn a match for the World Championship with Emanuel Lasker in 1910, prepared the eighth and final edition. Published in eleven parts between 1912 and 1916, it totaled 1,040 pages and included contributions by Rudolf Spielmann, Siegbert Tarrasch, and Richard Teichmann. International Master William Hartston called it "a superb work, perhaps the last to encase successfully the whole of chess knowledge within a single volume." Condition: Typed page tipped in between frontispiece and title else very good.

Book First Edition
Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Edition originale. Seltene Erstausgabe des "Handbuch des Schachspiels". Entworfen und angefangen von P. R. v. Bilguer. Rare first edition of the "Handbuch des Schachspiels". Designed and begun by P. R. v. Bilguer. Continued and edited by his friend v. d. Lasa, Berlin 1843. 25 x 16 cm, 376 and 124 pages. The Handbuch des Schachspiels (colloquially the Bilguer) is the title of the book on chess history, chess openings and chess endgames first published in 1843. The conception is by Bilguer, who began collecting material for the novel book in the 1830s. After Bilguer's early death in 1840, Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa continued Bilguer's work and published the work in 1843. The introduction first deals with the history of chess. Then follows, in the first part, a clearly arranged table of the chess openings according to the state of knowledge of chess theory at that time, enriched with analyses of the Berlin Chess School and important games on the individual variations. In the second part there is a systematic overview of the theory of endgames with precise analyses in several chapters.
