À Paris chez Jean Camusat, 1635-1636. 3 parties en un volumes petit folio, comprenant 132 planches (1 planche gravée du faux titre + 131 planches de médailles) + 396 pages + 3 ff + 6 ff (pages de titre + planche de faux titre illustrée + epistre au Cardinal de Richelieu) + 245 pages + 8 ff de table. Il manque à notre exemplaire la page de titre principal et sa reliure en pleine toile, sinon rare exemplaire complet des 3 parties. Jacques de Bie (1581-16.) fut un dessinateur et graveur flamand, connu par plusieurs excellents ouvrages de reproductions de médailles et de portraits qui firent références.

Así comienza la carta al lector con la que Cesare Ripa presentó su Iconologia cuando se imprimió por primera vez en el taller romano de los heredederos de Girogio Gigliotti en 1593. Ripa cumplía su propósito facilitando la interpretación de cada símbolo, pero el exito editorial se demoró casi un decenio hasta que en 1603 la obra se publicó con las ilustraciones que aseguraban su comprensión generalizada. A partir de esta, a lo largo del siglo XVII se sucederán otra treintena de ediciones en diferentes lenguas. Una de las que más éxito alcanzó fue precisamente la versión francesa que preparó Jacques Bie(1) quien, dándole la vuelta a la original de Ripa, elaboró las ilustraciones que ejemplificarían cada héroe, vicio, virtud o pasión y, con ellas por delante, le encargó a Jean Baudouin que reescribiese el comentario a las imágenes: estas pasaban a ser el punto de partida y empezar por la ilustración condujo a que se popularizase buscar su interpretación. El ejemplar que ofrecemos de esta reinterpretación que Bie propuso de la obra de Ripa pertenece a un resto de la edición de 1677 impresa por Louis Billaine, que debió ser adquirido por el también impresor y librero Laurent Hourdy, quien le dispuso una nueva portada a su nombre a la primera parte con fecha de 1681. Sugerimos esta circunstancia porque, aunque nos parece que no se ha señalado, salvo ese cambio, aquellos ejemplares con portada de Billaine 1677 y estos con la de Hourdy 1681 son estrictamente idénticos. Beautifully illustrated, this edition has an extended number of plates with a total of 912 coin impressions on 76 copperplates; 2 engraved frontispieces, one engraved bust portrait, and a remarkable suite of 13 exquisite equestrian emperor portraits, engraved by C. de Passe after Johannes Stradanus (Jan van der Straeten, 1523-1605). The work went through several editions, was first printed in Antwerp in 1615 and 1627 (Beller); later in Berlin in 1705 (Rüdiger). In 1738 publisher Martin Schagen got the publishing rights and issued the present copy. He could now reset the entire work and print it in elegant quarto format, add the Johannes Stradanus suite of portraits, extra suite of coin illustrations, and allow the plates the freedom to remain bound separately from the text. The edition was printed on handsome laid paper with ample margins, and the strikes of the plates are remarkably more beautiful than these of their predecessors. I-1.
