First Edition
First American Edition. 12mo (18.5cm.); publisher's grey printed wrappers; iv,[2],133,[21](ads)pp.; illustrated ads in rear. Wrapper and textblock exceedingly brittle, some small losses to extremities affecting text with brief loss of meaning, stock quite browned, last few leaves of advertisements chipped with some loss of meaning. Good only overall due to poor paper quality. Henry Georgist utopian novel first serialized in "Our Commonwealth" (Adelaide, Australia), a newspaper published by Ignatius Singer to promote land nationalization and the single tax. The work describes an anonymous narrator's experiences after being elected dictator of England and his activities promoting Georgist tenets, though the tale ends rather abruptly when it is revealed that it was all a dream. (See Lyman Tower Sargent, "Michael Flürscheim: From the Single Tax to Currency Reform," in "Utopian Studies," Vol. 21, no. 1 (2010), p. 160.) For other editions see Negley 89 and Sargent, p. 56.
