First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. A first edition copy of the famous Beeching Report, released in 1963 to reshape the struggling British railway system. A smart, first edition, in original publisher's paper wraps. The Reshaping of British Railways became more commonly referred to as The Beeching Report. The author of this report, Dr. Beeching, was a physicist and engineer who was also the chairman of British Rail for a short, but notable time during this period. This report aimed to identify unprofitable services within the rail system, creating a more effective structure. However, not everyone was happy with Beeching's approach, which suggested a ruthless, widespread closure of many routes, deemed as uneconomic. A third of all passenger services were closed as a result of this report. Part one of this work is comprised of the written report, outlining the problem, with proposed solutions and statistics. Part two contains thirteen maps depicting different aspects of the railway, folded together, clearly labeled 1-12, with map 9 being sectioned into 9 and 9A. In original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, very smart, with light sunning to the spine and to the reverse of the wraps. Light edgewear, with the occasional closed tear. Small tear to the front right hand corner, to the head of the work of part one. Tear to the head and tail of the front joint, to part one. The odd mark to wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
