There is an additional 38 pages of General Information and the book ends on page 660. This edition of Collier's Year Book surveys events in the third full year of America's participation in World War II. Its articles, reporting and describing the progress of the conflict in both East and West during 1944, record a series of successes for the United Nations which were to a large degree the result of the preparation, production, and even of the disappointment of previous years. To summarize the earlier, darker days, the months following Pearl Harbor saw the fortunes of the Allies at the lowest ebb. The Philippines, the Malay Peninsula, the Netherlands Indies, and Burma were lost, and in Europe Hitler was master of most of the Continent. At the Battle of Midway, however, in early June of 1942, came the first turning point for us of the war in the East, and by the end of the year we had about wrested Guadalcanal from the Japanese. In November we landed in North Africa, marking the beginning of our active participation in the European theatre of the war. In 1943 the skies for the Allies became brighter. The year had hardly begun when Hitler received his gravest disillusionment in what was to be the turning point of his war against Russia-the German debacle at Stalingrad. Then came the defeat of the Nazis and Italians in North Africa in May, the fall of Mussolini in July, the conquest of Sicily in August, and the surrender of Italy in September. Meanwhile, in the Pacific the Americans and Australians pressed back the Japanese in the Solomons, New Guinea, and New Britain. The year came to a climax in that theatre with our invasion in November of the Gilbert Islands. The United Nations forces approached 1944 heartened by their victories in 1943, and had reason to expect still greater accomplishments during the next twelve months. The year 1944 beheld the military might of the United States reaching supreme heights. We were at last, after miracles of production achieved during the previous two years, ready and able to carryon two separate and major wars diametrically across the earth. We had the greatest fleet in the annals of naval power, and the best-trained, most numerous army in our history, far outstripping in equipment and fighting power the vaunted German panzer divisions. How this army and navy lived up to their promise is vividly told in the following pages. D-Day came on June 6, two days after Rome was taken as the high point of the Italian campaign. The Allies, after the Normandy breakthrough, drove the Nazi armies in confusion across France, and in late fall faced the Germans at the Siegfried Line. In the Pacific General MacArthur kept his promise to return to the Philippines. He cleared Leyte of the Japanese in October, November and December, and a few days after the turn of the new year, invaded Luzon. Thus we brought the Pacific war to the doorstep of Japan's homeland.
