Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Indiana University Press, Bloomington & London, Second Printing, 1971. 466 pages with Notes & Index. Written by Roy W. Battenhouse. From a review: the author "establishes the relationship between Shakespeare's tragedies and Christian thought as represented by the Gospels, Pauline theology, Augustine, and Aquinas. Mr. Battenhouse, through a disciplined knowledge of current scholarship and over ten years of original research, is able to infer a theory of tragedy implicit in the language and structure of Shakespeare's tragedies." Very Good/Very Good. This is a solidly bound book. It is very clean and suffers no marks or scribblings in the text. However, note that the previous owner felt a need to stamp his name and address at the bottom of the title page (as well as on the inside of the front cover next to a circular imprint from a sticker i removed). The DJ also looks very nice. It has a few tears(one at bottom of the spine), two spots of small loss (top of spine, and front cover right corner), and a darkening on the white part of the its back. The DJ is already fitted with a protective cover. Here's a scholarly book smartly dressed. New York Times Roy W. Battenhouse, an Episcopal priest who was professor emeritus of English at Indiana University, died on Feb. 17 at Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Ind. Professor Battenhouse not only combined two great interests -- literature and religion -- but also argued, against many secular critics, that an understanding of Christianity was essential to understanding Western literature. He was author of "Shakespearean Tragedy: Its Art and Christian Premises" (Indiana University Press, 1969) and "Marlowe's 'Tamburlaine': A Study in Renaissance Moral Philosophy" (Vanderbilt University Press, 1941). He was the editor of "Shakespeare's Christian Dimension: An Anthology of Commentaries" (Indiana University Press, 1994).
