'If this little book shall beget an increased interest in the Bible, and a greater practical reverence for its teachings; if it shall prevail to silence cavillers, or to fortify its readers against their malign sophistries and quibbles; and if it shall prove to be an antidote, however feeble, to the present excessive taste for works of fiction, by fostering an opposite one for wholesome and vital truths, - it will achieve ends both needful and benign.' 6523.

Hardcover. xvi, [1], 698 p.; 23.5 cm. 8 periods, 281 chapters in Authorized King James version, with poems interpreting the texts `As, in culling the poetry, the chief quest has been for what was fitting and forceful, passages quaint and rugged have sometimes been preferred to such as were more elegant, but feeble and difuse. Such selections have been mostly made from poets contemporaneous, or nearly so, with King James's revisers of the Bible. It was deemed fit that a volume designed for general use should bear, in one word, a significant title. As our language failed, one has been derived from the Hebrew. It was found that nabi, the common word for prophet, also means poet, and is applied to one who freely utters impassioned language. By adding a Greek termination, we have nabion; and by inserting a single letter, to secure a right pronunciation, we have NAHBION.' (p. iv f.) Fair x-l half black morocco, split, front cover loose. Dampstained.
