leather. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover fully bound in soft brown leather, gilt decoration and title piece to spine, and fully marbled page block. Text in Latin. Former copy of the Viscount of Halifax, with his bookplate to front pastedown. Very good condition for age. Light wear to board edges and some light scuffs to spine. Foxing to endpapers and some light foxing to internal pages. Penned annotation to front pastedown, otherwise contents clean throughout. Binding is sound and spine is tight. AD. Used.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 12mo. [xxii], 144 pp. In recent semi-limp, slotted vellum with ribbon ties. First published in English in 1619 as The wisedome of the ancients translated by Sir Arthur Gorges from Bacon's Latin original of 1609. Title page states this to be the third edition, but according to Gibson (90) is in fact the sixth. Thirty-one mythological fables, mostly from Ovid's Metamorphoses and Fasti, interpreted in the light of Bacon's new learning or scientific method.

[Title leaf], *3-[*6], I-495pp; Has the engraved title, but lacks folding table and at least 1 leaf appearing before 1st dedication page, which is signed " *3 ". Old leather front and back, laid down on matching new leather. Engraved title page worn with marginal chipping and ink notation to upper corner of verso. Text very good. First edition of this important collection of minor works, pamphlets and Latin fragments found in the papers of Bacon and published here for the first time in the care of Isaac Gruter.
