Arthur Phillip's "The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany-Bay". The details include the price and the complete list of engravings, which in the 2nd edition are 55 plates, and the 3rd edition with 20 plates. Also a note "N.B. A few of the first Edition, with fine Impressions, and the Natural History, beautifully coloured, may be had of Mr. Stockdale, price 2 l. 12 s 6d. in boards." Phillip was the 1st governor of the penal colony at Botany Bay in New South Wales, Australia. We would all love to take advantage of Mr. Stockdale's offer of colored copies of Philip at 2 l. 12 s. 6d! Orig. full diced calf, spine decorated with 6 compartments decorated with black and gilt, slightly rubbed at edges and marked by a handsome original copy, very crisp internally. First edition of the FIRST MAJOR SHAKESPEARE INDEX/ CONCORDANCE, by the assistant librarian at the British Museum, once dubbed "The Prince of Indexers". Originally issued with Stockdale's 1790 two volume 8vo edition of Shakespeare's plays.

Some rubbing to edges and corners but the decorative spines are bright and clean with title and volume panels present. some foxing to volume 1 mainly to title page and portrait otherwise a nice clean set without names or inscriptions. Faint foxing on title page otherwise all pages clean and bright. Text block and binding tight. A lovely copy. Note: "Until Ayscough brought out his 'Index' in 1790 there was no concordance to Shakespeare. This was a speculation on the part of the publisher, John Stockdale, who paid two hundred guineas for the index, which was specially designed to accompany his two volume edition of the 'Dramatic Works'. In this compilation the words are arranged alphabetically with the lines in which they occur, then the name of the play, and in five separate columns the act, scene, page, column, and line.
