Hardcover. Condition: Used - near very good. Lg 8vo; Hinges tender, common with this book as textblock is clay-based and very heavy. The binding is square and the textblock is tight and the text is unmarked. The blue cloth covers are heavily rubbed with spine tips chipped. The gilt lettering is quite legible. There are 2 difficult-to-decipher inscriptions, one on the ffe verso, the other laid in. The author Bowes is mentioned in the one laid in.
4to. XII, 304pp. With 32 (16 chromolith.) plates and text-illustrations. Orig. pict. red cloth, t.e.g. Rebacked with the original spine laid down. Some fading to spine and front cover. Some spotting to first and last leaves. 2 text-leaves chipped in outer margin. Plate 8 (b/w) lacks parts of outer margin, not affecting illustration. Paper slightly browned throughout.

Lacking plate twenty-nine.With a former owner's inscription to the front pastedown, dated 1897.A beautiful celebration of ceramics in Japan throughout the centuries, offering an insight into Japanese porcelain, pottery and decorative arts up to the late nineteenth century. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head, with light handling marks to boards. Hinges strained, and slightly tender. Inscription to front pastedown. Internally, binding largely failed due to gutta percha. Half title, title page and frontispiece detached and loosely inserted, with a further twelve leaves detached and loosely inserted throughout the work, and remaining leaves exceptionally tender, and prone to detaching. Pages age toned, but clean. Lacking one plate. Chromolithographs remaining exceptionally vibrant. Good Only. book.

Also a comprehensively illustrated section on marks and monograms at the end. Some of the plates and first pages are loose (no loss), up to page 13 - though some of the plates may have fallen out of their correct position in the book. The book has been given fresh endpapers. The loose pages are chipped and browned round the edges; there is generally some browning to the edges of the pages. Top edge gilt. The spine is well bumped at head and foot and the cover is rubbed at the bottom edge. The cardboard slipcase in which the book is currently residing belongs to another Japanese publication! 4to.

Full Leather. Condition: near Very Good binding. Quarto. xiv, 304 pp., plates. First edition. In publisher issued full red levant goatskin with stamping in gold on the front cover and titled and tooled in gold on the spine. Binding is stamp-signed by Sotheran on the front turn-in. A handsome binding on a stately work illustrated by 32 plates (many chromolithographs). Front hinge is just starting to separate, but holding well. Half title is chipped around the edges and laid in; the frontispiece (with contemporary gift inscription on the recto) must have detached at some point and was reinserted with the illustration facing forward rather than than the title page. All 32 plates present.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. With 32 coloured plates, bound in full leather with raised bands and bright gold gilt to the boards and spine. The boards are a little rubbed and edge worn, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there is some very mild tanning around the edges throughout and edge wear to the early pages, but there are no other markings or inscriptions and the pages within are neat and complete.
