Grey, Frank (illustrator). No stated edition. N.p., many color ills. by Frank Grey on 36 plates. Rebacked, new endpapers. There is a torn blank leaf within the last poem, but this is a binding error; nothing is missing. Most pages stained or foxed. Three long poems for children: "The Little Sportsman's Alphabet," "The Farm Yard Hunt," and "A Country Holiday," all with lively illustrations. A well-loved copy of an appealing and scarce book. Ink presentation, "Thomas Lewis Teesdale Reeve--A Christmas Present from his Grandmamma and Auntie Flo, Dec. 25th 1883." One Thomas Lewis Teesdale Reeve was arrested 20 years later for deserting from the North-West Mounted Police in Canada. Valentine was a prolific editor and author of children's stories and verse, but this title is very uncommon in any condition (5 print copies in WorldCat). Fair (more condition details on request) Hardcover (pictorial cloth, gilt stamped).

A Country Holiday is the humorous tale in verse of the London Boy young Harry who comes to spend his Easter Holidays on his uncle's farm with amusing plates of his mishaps. Slightest touch of rubbing to corners of covers, original bookseller's tiny label on front pastedown, brief neat inscription at top of half-title, a little pale foxing to the 3 blanks, a couple of faint fox spots to margins of 3 plates, offset from the blanks, otherwise a very good plus clean tight copy. Attributed to L. Valentine by The London Library, date from an inscribed copy in the Bodleian. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
