Softcover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Moderate rubbing to cloth covers. Wear to corners of covers. Small 4mm tear to cloth at tail of front joint. Spine faded. Some foxing. No signatures.; xi, [1], 250 pages. Original purple cloth covered limp card covers with printed paper spine label. Page dimensions: 189 x 123mm. Thomson was the Provincial Surveyor for the area from 1856 to 1876, and the first person to map the interior of Otago. [Bibliographical References: Bagnall 5549 - "the chief interest today in the notes is in the side glances at some old identities, Maoris and Maori villages and conditions of travel"; Hocken 252 - "Disquisitions on most subjects under the sun, in imaginary conversations with the 'Squire,' the 'Stranger,' and our 'Companion,' interspersed with notes on travel through the interior of Otago"; Griffiths "Books and Pamphlets on Southern New Zealand" E58-59 - "[Thomson] was one of the founding giants of the southern region [. . .] It was so difficult to imagine that only 19 years after the first migrants came ashore on a Dunedin beach, there should have been available an author, a printer and a local market to have made possible such a sophisticated, cerebral and fascinating book."] ; 8vo.

Some splits and small chips to the paper spine label. Gutters split at endpapers. Some foxing.; xi, [1], 250 pages. Original blue cloth covered limp card covers with printed paper spine label. Page dimensions: 189 x 123mm. This copy inscribed by the author on the half-title: "Geo Smith the Gift of the Author". There is no author's signature with the inscription. Later owner's signature "A.
