Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. This unique book is an oblong spiral-bound book. The subject matter is fascinating, as the dress patterns are all from the Colonial period (some exact replicas of Martha's). The book seems intact, but as with spiral-bound books, one can't tell if a page was extracted. There are 15 pages of text, preceding a page with a paper-doll to be cut out, followed by pages of the dresses to be cut out (ALL INTACT). The text mentions 2 dolls, so I guess one page was removed (they are unnumbered). The pages are in nice condition, with a different dress in full color, on each succeeding page. Internally, the book is clean, but there are crayon doodles on 2 rear BLANK pages. They do NOT affect any printing. There is a prior owner's name just inside the front. Externally, the boards show corner bumping & a partial pencil sketch on the rear. Not bad at all for a 74 year old Children's book. Lists to $42.00 online. -- THE PHOTO IS A STOCK IMAGE -- NOT A PHOTO OF THIS COPY !!.

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Aline Bernstein was a renowned American costume designer for theatres, and co-founder of the Museum of Costume Art. Her father was a leading actor, and Aline was raised amidst the excitement of the stage and the social complexities of theatrical boarding houses. "An Actor's Daughter", first published in 1941, is the highly readable and always fascinating account of that life. This is the 1987 reprint, issued in paperback format by Ohio University Press. *********************************** Thomas Wolfe, who was romantically involved with Bernstein from 1925 to 1929, based the character of Esther Jack on Aline Bernstein in his novels "Of Time and the River", "The Web and the Rock", and "You Can't Go Home Again". ********************************* Excerpted from the cover blurb : " Bernstein's characteristic vividness of language draws more than just a family portrait. The book presents a gallery of colorfully drawn individuals, including boarders, cooks, servant girls, and slightly unsavory neighbors. Nama, Bernstein's beautiful and irresponsible other aunt, occupies a central place in the story, living a life filled with excess, extravagance, and gentleman callers - a life punctuated by periodic lapses into drug addiction. In time, the family's way of life begins to deteriorate. As their credit with local merchants begins to collapse, the story takes on a poignancy made more intense by the author's evocative prose." ******************************************** TITLE : An Actor's Daughter / AUTHOR : Aline Bernstein (1880 - 1955) / IMPRINT : Ohio University Press / PLACE : Athens, Ohio / DATE : (1987) / EDITION : Reprint. First Printing of the Ohio University Paperback Format / STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade paperback; 228 pages; 5 1/4" x 7 3/4", pictorial wraps, glued. *********************************************** CONDITION - VERY GOOD - Bright clean and fresh, with negligible wear (a couple of edge nicks) seemingly unread, with no spine creasing and tight binding.
