First Edition
Edition of 1500 copies printed at the Curwen press. Decorative printed wrappers, 8vo, 25 cm, 30, [1] pp, 16 plates. 131 items. From the foreword: "The collection of bookbindings which Major J. R. Abbey has formed during the past fifteen years now ranks as one of the finest in the world. He has bought extensively from many famous collections, the Rahir, Aldenham, Mencing, Moss, Clumber, Schiff, Ham House, and Dyson Perrins, which have been dispersed in the sale-room. But unlike many collectors of old bindings, of which he owns a rich and representative collection, he has also bought and commissioned bindings from living craftsmen. He is probably the only English bibliophile to possess a group of contemporary French bindings and if the art were not virtually dead in this country he would clearly be its Maecenas, for he has had fourteen bindings made for this exhibition. The Arts Council is deeply grateful to him for the opportunity of showing this selection from his modern bindings and thus calling attention to the need for a revival of this forgotten craft, which has so long and honourable a history." Rebound in plain wrappers with a faded original front wrapper laid down, otherwise Good.
