JEROME CABEEN

Jerome Cabeen was born and raised in Houston, Texas, the youngest of 5 boys. Music, art, faith and sports were areas of interest in his life from an early age. Cabeen graduated from James Madison High School in Houston in 1985 and attended Sam Houston State Univeristy in Huntsville, Texas from 1985 through 1990 where he graduated with a degree in Fine Arts and Teaching. Cabeen taught for for more than 20 years in the United States, Honduras and Liberia. As well he also was a basketball coach for 10 years in Texas and Florida.

Cabeen served as a Catholic missionary in Honduras, Central America and Liberia, West Africa from 2004-2010. This 6 year segment of his life served as the impetus for "Memoirs of a Reluctant Servant - Two Years of Triumph and Sorrow in Liberia, Africa." He has traveled throughout the world raising awareness for the poor and marginalized in society and has been a guest speaker at many Catholic parishes and universities in the United States raising awareness for Liberia Mission Incorporated and their stateside support, Franciscan Works. Cabeen has also engaged in missionary work in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bolivia and Colombia.

in 2008 Cabeen was awarded the prestigious "Peace Maker Award" by Teach Peace International. His book, "Memoirs of a Reluctant Servant - Two Years of Triumph and Sorrow in Liberia, Africa" has received international acclaim and reviews for its descriptive imagery of Liberia and the raw, unfettered telling of the story of his and his wife's experiences while in Africa. Cabeen is a huge fan of the Honduras National Soccer team, which he alludes to in the early stages of his book and, as well, he is a dedicated fan of the late guitarist Jimi Hendrix and the Toronto Calypso band, Kobo Town.

He and his wife Clarisa reside in Beaumont, Texas where Cabeen serves as Director of the Office of Family Life for the Diocese of Beaumont. As well, he is pursuing his Masters Degree in Pastoral Theology at the University of Dallas.
