Fun and Artistry thru the written word by Evan,
I started writing because I thought it would be fun and I thoroughly enjoy putting pen to paper or in my case, fingers to the keyboard. Where do I get my ideas? Mostly a seed of an idea comes from a dream, a nightmare or just something I think about when I cannot sleep. I hope to writing for many years. I would hope that you might like to read one of my stories and to spend a few hours with people you do not know but would enjoy reading about their lives.
Not long ago, I was sitting with a couple of my friends who are also authors. They were discussing their painting talents and how relaxing it was for them to get lost in the pleasure of creating. Then I overheard another person of my acquaintance say that art is art and books are just books. This person felt strongly that anyone can write a story or a book but it takes a certain talent to paint a piece of beautiful art. I don't doubt their beliefs but I do disagree. I feel bad for that person for such rigid thinking. I have a friend that is a very good artist known throughout our region. He can produce an beautiful watercolor in less than an hour and enjoys doing it. It is a type of painting that includes aspects of where we live on the Chesapeake Bay. This type of painting is his “bread and butter” for sale in his studio and gallery. Each piece of art allows him to focus on his other artistic interests and teaching others to paint.
Now I don't claim to be an expert in putting my creations to paper, but I do know it is relaxing and whole bunches of fun. Is it difficult to write a story? I don't think there are many writers out there that will tell you it is not difficult at times. I began writing my first novel about six years ago. I started by reading books and articles on how to write a book and went to seminars and conferences trying to gain some insight about writing. I found the courage to take the plunge, good or bad being the outcome. Five hundred pages later, as much as I loved writing it, the book was horrible. I just moved on to my next “first” novel.
I've been very fortunate to be happily married for over forty years to the same beautiful woman. Through the years, we've had our ups and our downs, laughed, cried, suffered, worked hard, lost loved ones...In other words, we lived. My sister said to me that she wondered how many books I would have written if I had started when in my twenties. I told her that I most likely would have fewer completed than I do now. Why? Because I feel that you have to live life before you can write about it. Those life experiences have contributed to my vivid imagination.
I hope you enjoy visiting my piece of the world and see what has come from that imagination and the fun I have creating artistry thru the written word.
Thanks to all of my readers and future readers,
Evan F. Clements, your humble author (evanclements@verizon.net)
