About this Item
Harle hupe, male. Merganser duck. An original hand-coloured copper plate engraving. Drawn and engraved by Francois-Nicolas Martinet.(1760-1800). From The Ornithologia, sive synopsis methodica by Mathurin Jaques Brisson of 1760. Signed in the plate lower left. Size of sheet: 14" x 10". Size of image: 9.1/2" x 8.1/4". Francois-Nicolas Martinet was a French engineer, engraver and naturalist. He engraved plates for numerous works on natural history but he specialized in ornithology. Most notable are these produced for The Ornithologia. Condition: Fine. The engraving is exceptionally clean and fresh. It is creased in the middle where the plate would have been folded in the book. The sheet upon which the image is printed is quite misshapen. It does not however appear to have been cut; but has rather been made that way. The image itself is not affected by this flaw of manufacture. Seller Inventory # 001014
