About this Item
No 8 Foret de l'Ìle Sitkha (Côte N. E. de l'Amérique) [Large and rare lithograph of Southeast Alaska 1830s, Russian America]. Romantic view of forests in Southeast Alaska, mighty spruce, some fallen, frame a view to mountain peaks. A generic indigenous person, likely Tlingit, with a cloak and staff is shewn to the left, two further figures are talking on a fallen trunk. In contrast to the people, the vegetation is rendered with accuracy. This is one of 65 lithographs from a Russian account of exploration in the Pacific in the 1820s. The Northeast designation given in the print title may be explained because from a Russian point of view Alaska was in the far east not far west. The print is after Postels, Alexandre Philippovitch (1801-1871), one of 7 (?) of Alaska in this work, and taken from the folio volume of Litke, F. P. (Fedor Petrovich), graf, 1797-1882 s Voyage autour du monde, exécuté par ordre de sa majesté l'empereur Nicolas Ier, sur la corvette "le Séniavine", dans les années 1826, 1827, 1828 et 1829. par Frédéric Lutké, ; partie historique, avec un atlas lithographié d'après les dessins originaux d'Alexandre Postels et du baron Kittlitz ; traduit du russe. par F. Boyé.Paris: Paris: Firmin Didot 1835-1836. 40x47 cm. Seller Inventory # 10jk08
