Double page engraving with original hand colour. 60x47 cms. The framed scene belongs to an Attic volute-krater in the Louvre that formerly belonged to Sir W Hamilton. The collection was sold to the British museum in 1772 but before shipping it was catalogued and drew accurately by Hancarville.the vases were of the utmost quality and became the foundation core of the British museum greek vases collection. The complete work in four volumes is a masterpiece of graphic art.This work influenced Wedgewood pottery and the collecting taste of the british elite eager to assemble greek vases ,statues and build stately homes in neo-classical style.ref Taschen publ pg 290.
