Original crayon style lithograph with hand colouring on a vellin type paper. on paper. Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 40.5 x 50.5 cm. The image size is ca. 37 x 47 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 15.9 x 19.9 inch. The image size is ca. 14.6 x 18.5 inch.Large plate no. 255, titled: 'Nemse de l' Ethiopie. This shows: a mammal species from the Egypt Nile region. It resembles a mongoose or similar mammal. This original plate originates from: 'Voyage en Egypte, en Nubie, et lieux circonvoisins, depuis 1805 jusqu'en 1828.', by J.J. Rifaud, published in Paris 1830-1836. This work first appeared in installments and was to contain five text volumes and 300 plates. The text never appeared and how many plates were published is not certain. A collection of 223 plates is known. The plates depict a wide variety of subjects: temples, hieroglyphics, tomb findings, boats (dows), jewelry, pottery, but also fishes, plants, etc. Ref: Ibrahim-Hilmy, p. 174. Graesse VI, 122. Brunet IV, 1203. Scarse.Artists and Engravers: Jean-Jacques Rifaud (1786-1852), sculptor by profession, had set his mind on travelling and embarked for his first voyage to Egypt in 1813. Rifaud spent many years in Egypt carrying out excavations. There he became the right-hand man of Bernardino Drovetti, Napoleon's Proconsul in Egypt. He helped Drovetti amassing a vast quantity of Egyptian antiquities, now i.a. in Turin, Paris and Berlin.Condition: Good given age. Remains of attachment to carrier to the rear, glue causes warping of the corners on the front. Flattened creases in the middle of the sheet, and a crease in the bottom left corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
