About this Item

FIRST BOOKFORM EDITION. 8 vo. Early 20th century cloth. (4), 112 pp. Eight folding lithographed plates after the author's drawings, two are colored. The COPY of the Nobel laureate (Physiology or Medicine, 1967) George Wald (1906-97) with his characteristic rubberstamp at the Biological Laboratories, Harvard. There are a few minor pencil marks by Wald. One or two plates were once loose and have been reinserted; a very good, crisp copy. G-M 1512. A significant association copy linking the 1967 Nobel laureate, George Wald, whose reasearches centered on the biochemistry of the retina, to Max Schultze (1825-74), "one of the greatest of all histologists. remembered by ophthalmologists for his monograph on the nerve-endings in the retina" (G-M). Here Schultze ".argued that the cones probably acted as the terminal nerve organs of the color sense, although they obviously served other visual functions as well." (D.S.B. - incorrectly citing 1867 as its date of publication). Not in the usual medical collections. Bookseller Inventory # 000352
