About this Item
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia: A Sequel to Campbell s History; by George S. Brown; Rand Avery Company, Printers, Boston, 1888. George Stayley Brown, MLA was a ship owner, historian and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Yarmouth township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1863 to 1866 as a Reformer. Brown makes it clear in his Preface, that he thought Rev. J. R. Campbell s A History of the County of Yarmouth, published in 1876, contained errors of both commission and omission. This book is the result of his perceived shortcomings of the earlier history. This book of 524 pages is a treasure trove of data on Yarmouth and its environs. Chapter titles include: The Micmacs; Early Roads between Chebogue and Yarmouth; Champlain s Early Career; Metrical Description of Port Royal in 1720; Acadians of Argyle; Early Settlers of Yarmouth Township; Maritime Interests of the County; the Loyalists of Tusket and Yarmouth; First Nova Scotia Parliament in 1758 and Township Records. In addition, there are 23 appendices. The book has a wealth of family genealogies, and I would be happy to respond to enquires about specific family names. This book with pages measuring 230mm X 145mm, is in near-fine condition. The cover is nice and bright but the spine and board tips are a bit scuffed and the spine is slightly faded. The book is as sturdy as when it was published, and the entire text block is free from any discolorations. A handsome copy of a very scarce book. Seller Inventory # 21112b
