The Scholastic Press, Portland OR, hardcover book, first edition, 1938. Extremely rare college textbook for the University of Washington's English class of the late 1930's, written by the class Professor. Described as "a functional analysis of narrative technique." Includes chapters on the novel as a phenomenon of human behavior, role of the reader in relation to purpose and technique, the study of character setting and action, art for art's sake, the objective attitude, romanticism, realism, style, and much more.No dust jacket. Hardcovers have slight wear on corners and edges. Color on boards is excellent, deep blue, no fading except on edges from handling. Two small impact marks and a tiny scratch on spine. First interior page has a stamp in the upper corner from the University of Washington's bookstore, and the light indentation of writing from a later sale, and a name. Interior pages are lightly tanned, supple, clean and intact. A few pages had the tips of the corner turned over at one time. Toward the back of the book, several pages have been notated with a few pencil marks, nothing major. Page 126 has some very small pencil writing in the margin.
