The extensive paintings of William Aiken Walker illustrate life in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, when cotton reigned. As a Southerner born to an Irish Protestant father and a South Carolinian mother, Walker grew up with a profound respect for the often-misunderstood cotton field worker. His painterly expressions document cultural and social conditions of the time, offering respect for the people themselves.
From the Inside Flap:
For more than fifty years, William Aiken Walker traveled throughout the South painting landscapes, rural genre scenes, and black character studies. By the time of his death in 1921, Walker had produced a massive body of work on Southern subjects. In fact, he left the most extensive record of black life by any artist of the period.
Both a biography of Walker and a guide to his work, this book, first published in 1972 by LSU Press, is now presented by Pelican in a magnificent new format with scores of color photographs not used in the previous edition. There are ninety-nine color illustrations and sixty-three black and white paintings and drawings. Roulhac Toledano has written a new introduction and revisits Walker's paintings and scholarship on Southern art.
The book contains an extensive chronology and sections on Walker's life in Charleston, Baltimore, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Mississippi. A comprehensive examination of the blacks in Walker's art and the increasingly realistic qualities in his painting help to place his work in perspective. A final chapter on Walker as a chronicler of the South defines his major contribution to American culture.
August P. Trovaioli, like his father and grandfather before him, was a conservator of paintings and in his lifetime restored over two thousand works of art, both American and European. Born in Italy, Mr. Trovaioli grew up in Pennsylvania and studied art at the University of Pittsburgh.
Roulhac B. Toledano is a native of New Orleans. She graduated cum laude from Newcomb College in 1960, where she majored in art history. Ms. Toledano is an authority on architecture of New Orleans and worked on volumes II, IV, V, and VI of the New Orleans Architecture Series, published by Pelican.
Photographer Betsy Swanson, a New Orleans native and Newcomb College graduate, traveled throughout the South photographing Walker's paintings and drawings as she interviewed the collectors and owners of the works. Ms. Swanson earned her Masters of Fine Arts from Tulane University and went on to hold such positions as historian, photographer, archivist, and historical consultant and has contributed her photography to dozens of books, magazines, catalogues, and periodicals. Ms. Swanson is the author of Historic Jefferson Parish, and worked on Volumes I thru VI of the New Orleans Architecture Series as an author, editor, and photographer. Each of these titles is available from Pelican.
