Folio, engraved title page, full page engraving with dedication to Henry Prince of Wales, engraved title to the Odyssey and again to the Batrachomyomachi all present in this copy including three original blanks. This copy without the portrait of Chapman and the two un-signed leaves of sonnets added to the Iliad. After consulting Pforzheimer, Langland to Wither and Lowndes, I think the best source for evaluating this copy is the ESTC. Though "best" remains far from ideal. Collating first: Engraved inclusive title with blank verso. Engraved dedication page to Prince Henry to the verso with a blank recto. *2-6; A1-6 (A6 blank.) Iliad: B-z6, Aa -FfG, Gg8 (last blank present). Odyssey A6 (First blank, second is engraved title to Odyssey; B-Q6, R8 (R8 is blank); S-Z6; Aa-Hh6; Ii8 - genuine final blank. Batrachomyomachis - Preliminary blank; engraved title page; 94, A-Z4, Aa2. As far as defects they are few and far between. On page 81 (H5) of the Iliad there are some repaired holes to the center of the text - approximately 5 small holes. The title page of The Odyssey has some minor restoration to the margin. The text does appear to be washed. The book is now bound in dark blue morocco with all edges gilt, executed by F. Beford. Full brown morocco case by Mountenay. Three previous owner book-plates present on the front paste-down and an ink inscription by Henry Gibbs, St. Dunstan's, 1860 to the front free endpaper. An exceptionally beautiful and complete very early edition of Chapman's classic work. Keats had it right. Near Fine. Seller Inventory # 20018
