About this Item
Barrus (1864 - 1931) was a friend, secretary, traveling companion and biographer to the naturalist and writer John Burroughs, who named her his literary executor. Barrus edited and published Burroughs' journals and 'The Life and Letters of John Burroughs'. Clara Barrus was one of the few American women physicians of the late 19th century. She received her MD from Boston University in 1888. In 1893 she practiced in Orange County, New York at the Middletown State Homeopathic Hospital, the first strictly homeopathic American hospital for treating mental disorders, where she worked for 17 years. Tall 8vo, frontispiece portrait of Whitman, xxix, 392pp, ills. One of 250 copies "bound uncut with paper label."
